How do I know if there is mold in my house?
There are three main factors that indicate mold growth, and it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with them so you know what to look for.
Many people live with mold in their homes for years without realizing it, and by then it has caused major health problems and damage to their home.
Allergy symptoms are the most common indication of mold, so if you notice yourself sneezing, coughing, sniffling or having other congestion issues more often when you’re home than when you’re out or at work, it is a good sign that you have mold in your home.
If you don’t feel any symptoms, there could still be mold hidden away. Any musty, damp smells should not be ignored as they are a good clue that mold is growing. The smell might be very faint if it is hidden behind walls or floors, but just because you do not smell it all throughout the house does not mean that it is any safer!
Now the third, and some might say most obvious, clue is actual sights of mold growth. But this is not something to be taken lightly, as there are many people who do not even know what to look for, and it is common for people to mistake mold as dirt or soot. Mold can appear in many forms and colors, from white and stringy to black and spotty. Mold can also come in green and brown, and occasionally will take on a pink, purple or yellowish color if it is located behind vinyl or wall paper. And even if it seems like there is only a small amount, you should be wary, as there could be a much larger mold colony growing behind the walls or beneath the floor boards.
