How do I re-light my furnace pilot light?
The pilot light in your furnace is the most important aspect of your furnace; it cannot run if it has gone out. The flame can easily go out if there is a draft in the furnace room. If you are unsure of how to light the pilot and there are not instructions provided on the furnace, simply follow these easy steps:
- Identify pilot light settings. It should include a gas valve with off, on and pilot settings.
- Switch off valve. Wait 3 minutes.
- Turn valve to pilot setting. While pushing the reset button on the pilot control panel, hold lighted match up to pilot opening. Wait until flame is burning, turn valve to on.
If the pilot will not light, turn gas off and clean opening with fine wire brush. Try steps 2 and 3 again. If the pilot will not light, it may be due to a flawed thermocouple. Call a Calgary furnace repair expert to book an inspection.
