How can I tell if my ducts need to be cleaned?
If you are not sure if your ducts need to be cleaned, there are a few areas you can inspect to help you make your decision.
The first place to look is your furnace filter. It is recommended that filters be replaced every 4 to 6 weeks, so if you notice that it is getting filled with dust and dirt more often than that, you will likely need your furnace and ducts cleaned soon.
The second place you can look is the return air duct. Typically found in the central area of your home, these come with easily removeable covers and will accumulate a fair amount of dust and dirt when your furnace and ducts need cleaning. The return air ducts suck in air from the house and direct it to the furnace where it will be filtered and then redistributed throughout your home, so they are way to gauge when to clean your furnace and ducts.
The third way to check is by looking at your heating vents, almost always located on the floor, close to windows. These will begin to accumulate dust and debris when it is time for a furnace and duct cleaning.
