Do most cleaning companies use products that are environmentally friendly?
You need to ask about their environmental impact. Many chemicals are harmful to the environment – not just the outside natural world but to the well-being of your home and all who are living in it.
Where do their cleaning chemicals come from, and are they environmentally friendly?
If there is any waste water, where do they plan on disposing of it?
These may be two of the most expensive carpet cleaning questions that people fail to ask. If you or your cleaner are found liable, it could cost you thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees.
In nearly every city or town in Canada it is illegal to dump waste water in the street now.
This has been rapidly changing over the last few years, and municipalities are becoming more stringent on enforcement. Waste water can carry all kinds of disease causing bacteria, and chemicals that can pollute waterways and groundwater drinking supplies. It can dangerously encourage the growth of bacteria in ponds, lakes, and streams.
Are the chemicals you use safe for my family and me?
Due to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly cleaning products, there are many on the market that are effective and also non-toxic. Make sure the products the company uses are safe enough to leave a healthy, clean floor behind that your children or pets can play on without worry. If there is any doubt about the company's choice of cleaning products, it is recommended to choose another company. They should be able to ensure you that their products are safe for use in the home.
Are your products pet friendly?
If you own any pets, then you need to make sure that the chemicals will not leave residues that maybe harmful to your pets.
We know that dogs, cats and other small animals like to roll around on carpets and furniture. If the carpet cleaning company you select is not conscious of the products they use, your pets may be at risk. Just the fumes of some products are toxic and lethal to pet birds. You owe it to your pets to be sure they are thought of.
Are the products safe and non-toxic?
Since young children and pets are on the carpets most often, you need to make sure that it is safe for them.
Where will the technicians be disposing of waste water or chemicals?
You should be able to trust that your cleaning technicians use green, natural and eco-friendly products and always dispose of waste properly.
Do they use products that are certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute?
Carpet cleaning businesses that use CRI-certified products are recognized as Seal of Approval service providers.
You can take comfort when you hire a certified company because Seal of Approval products and equipment are independently tested and certified to effectively clean carpet without causing any damage. If you opt for a company that is not CRI-certified, it could end up costing you money if the products they use either damage your carpet, or are hazardous/poisonous.
Do they use natural and bio-degradable cleaning products?
Look for a socially responsible company that cares about their employees, the community and the environment.
Chances are that if they do not care about the environment or the community, they do not care about their employees either. This will reflect in their work ethic and ultimately affect the quality of the job.
Do they leave your carpets in a pH neutral state?
Leaving the carpet in a pH neutral state prevents a crunchy feel on some types of carpet fibers.
It is a good idea to ask your carpet cleaning technician about this before you agree to anything. Some technicians do not use products that will leave a soft finish, and this could cause problems when he/she is done their work. If you are looking to have a soft, lush carpet then this is an extremely important question to ask!
Do I have a choice in cleaning options?
A reputable carpet cleaning service will provide you with several cleaning options.
Is the cleaner pressuring you into a certain type of service? Are they providing you with several options?
These are important considerations. The cleaning service should of course give their recommendations of the cleaning options that they offer. But as the customer, the end decision is entirely up to you and you should not be pressured, only given recommendations.
